Question

This year I received the American Opportunity Credit, after reviewing and changing some things I then received the Lifetime Learning Credit. Can someone explain this?

I  am single and this is my first time filing my taxes. From the articles, it seems like the Lifetime Learning credit is for people who are getting an education outside their 4 years. I  received Hope scholarship all 4 years of college and it did not ask me about that originally. Now that I  had gone back to review it then asked me about Hope and that is when it changed to LifeTime Learning Credit instead of the American Opportunity Credit.

The Hope credit was "replaced" by the American Opportunity Credit.  You can only claim the AOTC or Hope credit for the first 4 years of higher education. Since you received the Hope Credit for 4 years of higher education already, you are now only eligible for the Lifetime Learning Credit.
