Question

TTaxDeluxe Is NOT Adding More Than 1 1098-T Together ???

My son attends two (2) colleges for a 5-year elec engineering program.

I have two (2) 1098-Ts, one for each, but it appears TTaxDeluxe is not adding them together and I may have efiled an incorrect return (and lost thousands of dollars in missed deductions/credits)???

I have tried contacting TTax about this, but the customer service seems only focused on

product sales or tax questions, not software defects!

To enter the second Form 1098-T from a different school, here are the steps:

    • After sign into your account, select Pick up where you left off
    • At the right upper corner, in search box , type in 1098t then Enter
    • Choose the 1st choice Jump to 1098t on the search results /
    • Next screen, Your Education Expenses Summary, select Edit under the existing student.
    • Next screen, Here's Your Education Summary, select Add New School
    • See image

If you have already submitted your tax return, you will have to wait until Feb 12 when the IRS opens the gate. You cannot return to the program to make any changes before that.

If your return got rejected for whatever reasons, you can return to the program to add your Form 1098-T along with other changes.  You do not need an amendment 1040-X.

If your return has been accepted, you will have to amend your return by filing a form 1040X.  You should not try to amend your return until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund or your payment has cleared.

Beginning with the 2019 tax year, you can e-file amended tax returns. If you used TurboTax to prepare Form 1040-X, follow the software's instructions to e-file the amendment.

    How to file amendment

If you discover an error after filing your return, you may need to amend your return. The IRS may correct mathematical, clerical errors on a return and may accept returns without certain required forms or schedules. In these instances, there's no need to amend your return. However, do file an amended return if there's a change in your filing status, income, deductions, credits or tax liability. Use Form 1040-X to correct a previously filed Form 1040, 1040-SR, 1040A, 1040EZ, Form 1040NR, 1040-NR EZ or to change amounts previously adjusted by the IRS. You can also use Form 1040-X to make a claim for a carryback due to a loss or unused credit.

LinaJ2020, thanks, I understand; but, that is exactly what I did in the first place.

My problem is that after I entered the two (2) 1098-Ts, I did not notice that TTaxDeluxe only produced one (1) and even that was screwed up.  On the printed form, it shows the name and address of the first 1098-T school, and the amount I had input for the second 1098-T.

It did NOT add the amounts together, or print both 1098-Ts.

I believe TTaxDeluxe is NOT working properly for this!

Since I have already efiled, I need someone from TTax to be responsible and check this out for me.

However, I cannot get ahold of anyone!

If you've prepared your tax return and want to submit a written question to a tax expert, you can receive a written response. You pick the part you'd like reviewed and add any questions you have for them. You'll get a response with their advice for you about a day later. Here is how:

    To get a written response:

    1. Sign in to your TurboTax Live account.
    2. As you proceed through the Review section, on the Let's get ready for your expert review screen, select Continue.
    3. On the next screen, we'll check that all your calculations are correct, you have all the required tax forms, and there's no missing data. When everything is good, Continue.
    4. Select Yes, I have questions about my return.
    5. You'll have the opportunity to tell us about what you'd like our tax expert to focus on. It's important to be as specific as possible in your question so that your tax expert can tailor their response to your situation.
    6. Select Get a written response.
    7. Confirm your question and select a topic related to your question. You can even upload additional documents if you think they'll be helpful.
    8. When you're ready, select Submit for review to send your question to your tax experts.

    What can I expect next?

    After submitting your question:

    • You'll receive an email notification confirming that your question has been submitted
    • You'll receive another email notification when your written response is ready, usually about 24 hours later.
    • In your email, you’ll be directed to log back into TurboTax where your tax expert's written response will appear in My tax home.
    • You won't be able to reply to your tax expert’s message, but they'll include instructions on what to do if you still have questions.
    • No changes will have been made to your return by the tax expert, so it's up to you to consider and implement any changes your tax expert recommends.
