Can I deduct my daughters college tuition which was paid from my savings?

    You must be claiming the student as a dependent, in order to claim the tuition credit or deduction.

     

    If the student claims himself, he may count the money you paid, in calculating the credit.

     

    If the other parent claims the student as a dependent, that person may count the money you paid, in calculating the credit.

    The parent(s) who claim the student as a dependent on their tax return, can claim the out of pocket tuition paid. It does not matter who may have actually paid that out of pocket tuition amount either.
