If the student on your return has already received the American Opportunity Credit for the first four years of college, this can be corrected by updating some information in the Education section of TurboTax.

.) Federal

.) Deductions & Credits

.) Education

.) Expenses and Scholarships (Form 1098-T)

.) Click Edit next to the student's name

.) Click Edit next to Education information

.) When you get to this question, click yesHad _____ Earned Four Years of College Credit Before 2018?

.) Answer the questions on this screen: Did _____ Ever Receive the American Opportunity or Hope Credit?

Now, once this interview section is completed, it should take you to your Summary of Your Education Deductions & Credits, and the American Opportunity Credit should no longer be allowed.
