Question

Under Deductions & Credits, turbotax is saying I can't claim an education tax (1098T) because either someone else can claim me or there were no education expenses. Why?

No one can claim me and there are education expenses, so how can I enter my 1098T?

Do you have scholarship income greater than expenses?

There could be many reasons why TurboTax says you can’t claim an education credit. As Tax Champ Bsch4477 says, if Box 5 or scholarships and grants included elsewhere is larger than Box 1 then you will not receive an education credit.

If all your expenses were covered by a 1099-Q 529, QTP, or Coverdell ESA distribution then you would not receive an education credit unless you chose to make some amounts taxable.

Finally, check your entries to make sure you answered all the questions correctly.

There's a new urban myth among college students that says they can get a $1000 from the government just for filing a tax form. For most of them, they simply aren't eligible. A full time unmarried student, under age 24, even if you don't qualify as a dependent, is only eligible for the refundable portion of the American Opportunity Credit if he supports himself by working. You cannot be supporting yourself on parental support, 529 plans or student loans & grants. It is usually best if the parent claims that credit.

You cannot claim a credit if you are, or can be, claimed as a dependent by someone else.

They see a 1098-T, in hand,  as Willy Wonka's Golden Ticket to a government handout.

If you are eligible, you have answered  something wrong, in the interview. But, a lot of people are just not eligible. See Also see this TT FAQ https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/3383321-why-didn-t-i-get-a-credit-or-deduction-for-education-expen...
