Question

We helped to pay for tuition for our grandson who is not a dependent. Can we claim that as a deduction?

No.  That was a great thing to do for your grandson.   But only the person who can claim him as a dependent can get an education credit.    So more likely his parents get the credit.  You do not get a tax deduction for a gift to a family member.

The parents may include the money you paid, in calculating the credit, for themselves, as long as the student is their dependent.
