What do you do if you did not receive a 1098 from the school but still had additional education expenses?

The school is not sending a 1098 because my daughter received a pell grant that covered tuition but we had other education expenses for books and laptop. Do I enter the amount for tuition and grants in the 1098 form even though I didn't receive one or do I leave both blank and only enter my additional expenses?

No. You will need a form 1098-T to claim the credit. To be eligible to claim the AOTC or LLC (Lifetime Learning Credit), the law requires a taxpayer (or a dependent) to have received Form 1098-T from an eligible educational institution, whether domestic or foreign.

You may claim your out of pocket expenses, if any, as adjustment to your income using Form 8917 (Tuition and Fees Deductions) on line 21 of 1040.

Q.  Do I enter the amount for tuition and grants in the 1098 form even though I didn't receive one?

A.  No. That would have TT erroneously check the box on form 8863 that you got one.

After answering no to the 1098-T question, answer yes to the have an exception for needing a 1098-T  question. That will allow to enter all the same info that would have been on  a 1098-T, as well as any additional expenses you have.
