What if I can't remember if I claimed the educational credits in a prior year?

I need to answer if I claimed the education credits and can't remember

That question wants to know if you have claimed the American Opportunity Credit (AOTC) 4 times already.    You can only claim that credit a maximum of 4 years; there is no limit on the number of years you can claim the Lifetime Learning Credit.  

 

An eligible student (for the purposes of the AOTC) is defined as a student who:

  • Is enrolled at least half-time in a program leading to a degree, certificate, or other recognized credential
  • Had at least one academic period beginning during the year
  • Didn't claim the American Opportunity Tax Credit for more than three previous years
  • Didn't complete the first four years of post-secondary education before the beginning of the year

 

If you are unsure, you will need to check your previous returns to see if you claimed the AOTC.    If you don't have your previous years' returns, you can get transcripts at Get Your Tax Record
