Question

What should I do after I realize I didn't pay for FICA for more than a year.

HI,

Thanks for advice in advance.

I was an International student in Michigan, US from Sep 2016, Dec 2017.

Then started my work in Michigan on OPT from Mar 2018. My H1B status became effective on Otc.1st.2018.  My initial FICA withhold was setup for 0 as OPT status should not pay FICA taxes.

I realized that my employer didn't update my FICA withhold as after Otc.1st.2018. I should have FICA deducted from my paycheck. Now HR already updated my withhold started 2020.01.01 to make sure my next year tax withhold is correct.

As of now, I should file a tax report for 2019 as resident alien. Does TurboxTax cover the FICA taxes that I should've pay in the whole year 2019? If not, what should I do.

Yes, you should file a resident return this year and can use TurboTax.

This cannot be corrected though TurboTax.    You must work directly with your employer as to how this FICA will be paid. Then once paid, they need to provide you with a corrected W-2.  You will need to amend your return.

My employer did not withhold my FICA taxes
