Question

What state(s) do I have to file taxes in?

I am currently attending a college in California. However, I am not able to be claimed as a dependent on my parent's taxes because I took a semester off of college to work (in CA) and thus did not meet the 5 month full-time student requirement, and I made more than $4,300.

I am not sure which state(s) I need to file taxes in, and what my residency status in those states should be. I have a Wisconsin driver's license, although I do not drive. I rent a residency in CA, and do not own any property in either WI or CA. My employer has my CA rental address as the address on my W-2 and paychecks. I am registered to vote in WI, although I did not vote in any elections in 2021.

Normally (as a full-time student), I know I would file as a non-resident in CA and a resident in WI, but since I lived and worked in CA without being a full-time student, I am unsure what my filing status should be.

You continue to  file as a non-resident in CA and a resident in WI.  Th fact that your primary reason for being in CA is to attend school means you are still a WI.  The temporary break in schooling, and in your dependent status, is not enough to change that.

You remain a WI resident until your intent is not to return to WI and you  take concrete steps to change your residency.
