Question

When it comes to Education-related deductions and credits does that count for paying for language school abroad? If so do plane expenses also count?

I've paid for language school in Japan in 2022 as well as plane expenses but wont be attending until March 2023. Can I claim the schooling for education-related deductions? Can I claim the plane expenses for getting to the school as well or strictly just the education?

Travel is not a qualified education expense.  You cannot deduct plane fare or the cost of traveling to and from school by any means of transportation.

Q. Can I claim the plane expenses for getting to the school ?

A. No.  Travel is not a Qualified Educational Expense (QEE).

Q. When it comes to Education-related deductions and credits does that count for paying for language school abroad?

A. Probably not.  First the school would have to be an eligible institution  (on the DOE student loan list).  Second, the course would have to be part of the degree program.

Enter your school at the link below, to see if it's on the dept. of education list.
