Since your son's dorm room fees were paid for with a 529 plan distribution, the cost can be deducted from the taxable portion of the distribution. However, you will only see an entry field for Room and Board if your 529 distribution (shown on 1099-Q) is greater than what was inputted for the 1098-T. Once you enter the information from both forms, you can go back and enter the Room and Board information.
To navigate back to the correct screen, follow the below steps in TurboTax:
Open your return.
Search 1098-T with the magnifying glass tool on the top of the page.
Click on the link Jump to 1098-T in the search results.
Click edit next to your son's name.
Go to Other Education Expenses under the Education Summary.
If the 529 distributions are greater than what was inputted for your 1098-T, you will see a field to enter Room and Board.
I have attached an example of the screen you should see. The numbers shown are example numbers. Under Room and Board, please enter the amount paid with the 529 distribution.
