If you are using TurboTax Online, and assuming you are not claimed as a dependent:

  1. Open or continue your return
  2. In the search box, type 1098-t and hit the Enter key, select the Jump to 1098-t link at the top of the search results
  3. Follow the instructions on the screen to enter info from Form 1098-T.

The 1098-T is only an informational document. The numbers on it are not required to be entered onto your tax return. However receipt of a 1098-T frequently means you are either eligible for a tuition credit or possibly your student has taxable scholarship income.

If you claim the tuition credit, you do need to report that you got one or that you qualify for an exception (the TurboTax interview will handle this)

If the student is his parent's dependent, then the parent claims the tuition credit, not the student.  The parent enters the 1098-T on their return.

You claim the tuition credit, or report scholarship income, based on your own financial records, not the 1098-T.
