Question

Where do I post interest if I don’t have a 1098?

I purchased a rental home from a private seller. Refinanced with a loan company in June.  Where can I enter the interest I paid for the first six months? (Private party did not provide a 1098).

You should have had some sort of legal agreement with the seller which supplied the sellers EIN or Social Security Number.

If you can't get that number, you'll have to paper-file using the sellers name.

I would advise you contact the seller and explain the situation. The seller should want to supply a number to you or at least make sure he/she also claims the interest you paid as income. The IRS will match the interest paid to interest received.

You can enter the interest paid in TurboTax using the 1098 screen, but the program will show an error if there is no EIN or Social Security Number for the payee.
