Question

Where do I put in my laptop for a schooling expense? Also, can I still claim it as a deduction if my brother put it on his credit card and I am paying him back?

Yes, paying with a credit card is the same as paying with cash, and paying with borrowed funds is the same as paying yourself.

The expense for the laptop is an additional education expense. You enter those expenses after you enter the 1098-T from the school. If you attended and paid an education institution, they should issue to you a 1098-T or it could be online in your student online account.

IF someone else claims you as their dependent, such as your parents, they claim the additional expenses to get a credit (more expense than scholarship). If there is no credit, but instead taxable income (more scholarship than expense), you, the student need to claim that income.

To get the screen to enter computers, answer yes when asked if you have book expenses.
