Question

Where do I show the 529 contributions on New York State taxes? I think this normally is shown on page 2, #30 on the IT-201 form.

As you are completing your New York State return, you will get to a page titled Changes to Federal Income. Click Start next to New York college savings account activity. On the next page, you can enter the 529 contributions paid. I have attached a screenshot below for additional guidance.

I entered my 529 contribution on line 30 which is in “red”. Thus , an error and I can’t file . On IT-201 indicated a full time NY resident . If I leave blank and don’t take the deduction it doesn’t ifucatecsn error  and I lose it. What’s  the problem ?

If you're a New York State taxpayer and an account owner, you may be able to deduct up to $5,000 ($10,000 if you're married filing jointly) of your Direct Plan contributions when you file your state income taxes.

To enter your contributions:

  1. Open your NY state return
  2. On the screen Changes to Federal Income
  3. select New York 529 college savings account activity
