According to the Kentucky Department of Revenue, a credit equal to 25 percent of the amount of the federal American Opportunity Credit and the Lifetime Learning Credit is available. However, the credit phases out for higher income levels, In general, you must meet the following requirements to claim a Kentucky education credit:

    • This is a nonrefundable credit so you must have a tax liability to qualify
    • Your filing status must not be married filing separately
    • You must have attended a university or college within the Commonwealth of Kentucky
    • The credit is not allowed for graduate-level classes
