Question

Why does American Opportunity Credit say I have 4 years claimed when I only entered 2 previously years?

When entering how many previous years I have claimed the AOC, I indicated 2 years for 2019 & 2020, however once entered, it indicates I no longer quality due to already claiming 4 years - which is inaccurate. What am I missing? TIA

That question is only asked only once and only in the Education section, so if you reported only 2, that is what the program should show.

Please make sure it is not referring to the first four year of a degree.

The education section can "hold on" to prior entries. If the problem persists, try deleting the 1098-T and even the student worksheets and Form 8863.

If you go this route, re-enter the 1098-T . You will also need to go through the interview as well and update all the information relating to education.

    Online

Select Tax Tools then Tools from the left side-bar

Select "Delete a Form" from the TOOLS SCREEN

Find Form 1098-T, Form 8863 and Student Worksheet and delete

It is the section that asks "Enter the number of prior years that the American Opportunity Credit and Hope Credit have been claimed. Then number of years was claimed. I used 2019 & 2020, so I put 2 years. The next screens then indicate I already claimed 4 years of credit for the AOC and not qualified to receive it this year. I did try to delete the education file and re-enter the information with the same results.
