Question

Why is it saying I'm not eligible for the Student Loan Credit on my MN state tax return?

I have been a MN resident my entire life and make student loan payments on loans that are in my name. Those are the only requirements listed on the MN Dept of Revenue website.

One reason you would not qualify is that you don't have any income tax this year in Minnesota. The credit is only available up to the amount of your Minnesota income tax liability. You can look on your state tax summary in TurboTax to see if you have a tax liability as follows:

While working on your state tax return in TurboTax:

  1. Choose Tax Tools from your left menu bar in TurboTax Online
  2. Choose Tools
  3. Choose View Tax Summary
  4. Choose the Back option in the left menu bar when you are done
