It depends.

Did you not report the information for your 1098-T form when you were preparing your tax return?

If not, you will need to file an amended return to include this information.

See the attached link for instructions to help you amend your return.

How to amend my return?

Once you start the process of amending your return, you will need to do the following to report your 1098-T for the education credit:

  1. Go to the Federal section of the program
  2. Select Deductions & Credits
  3. Select Expenses and Scholarships (Form 1098-T) and click start
  4. Select Edit to review your information for the 1098-T
  5.  Select Add a student (or edit if your student is already listed)
  6. The next page will ask you if you received a 1098-T form.  Select yes.

If you claimed a tuition credit, there will be an entry on line  3 of Schedule 3.  There may  (most likely) also be an entry on line 18c of form 1040.  Form 8863 will also be included with your return.

If you claimed the less likely Tuition and fees deduction, instead of a credit, there will be an entry on line 21 of Schedule 1 and form 8917 will be part of your return.

If you are, or can be, your parent's dependent, you are not eligible for a tuition credit or deduction. But they can claim a credit based on your education.
