Question

10+ years ago my social was falsely used to file taxes. I've been using an IP PIN ever since. Now it's asking about an ID theft affidavit. Do I need to do all that?

Yes, if IRS is currently requesting a Form 14039, Identity Theft Affidavit, to be filed, then you need to file that for an active investigation so the IRS active investigation can determine which returns filed under your SSN are yours and which ones may not belong to you.

Once you file the Form 14039, Identity Theft Affidavit, to IRS:

  • You'll receive a letter from the IRS acknowledging the IRS received your Form 14039
  • Your case will be assigned to our ‘Identity Theft Victim Assistance’ organization where it will be researched and resolved by an employee with specialized identity theft training.

Complete the form if you need the IRS to mark an account to identify questionable activity.  If IRS has requested you complete and file the Identity Theft Affidavit with them, then do it.
