1099-G amend

We filed our taxes and got a 1099-G form after the fact. It seems like we need to amend. When I try to amend, it does not allow me to include both of our names- only allow one name. The form included both of our names. We got this form because of the State refund. We itemized in the previous year.

I think I understand some issues, but need more information on others.

  • You received a 1099-G for a state refund.
  • You Itemized in 2022 so you may owe an additional tax.
  • You've already filed your taxes.  So you need to amend them.
  • This is the statement I don't understand
    • "When I try to amend, it does not allow me to include both of our names- only allow one name."
  • If this is for the entire tax return:
    • The amended return is just a carbon copy of the original.  It is reset so you can make additional changes.
    • If there were two names on the original tax return, they will still be there.
    • If there weren't two names on the original tax return, You can add the new wone on the amended tax return under My Info.
  • If this is because there are two names on the 1099-G
    • Enter it under the first name that's on the 1099-G
    • AS long as you're filing jointly, it will be fine.

Hi John,

Yes,  the form has both of our names and we are already filing jointly. My next thing is that...when I try to enter the info into the amend file. There isn't a field for Box 2. It just asks for Box 1, Box 4, Box10a, Box 10B, Box 11, locality, and local income tax withheld. So, we are reporting zero for all those boxes since it didn't include Box  2. I guess I'm confused as to why I'm amending if I'm reporting zero for what they're asking. And how do I include the Box 2?

Box 1 of Form 1099-G reports unemployment or paid family leave.   Box 2 reports state and local refunds.   It sounds like you entered your state and local refund in the unemployment sections, so I would delete that entry and follow the instructions for a state or local refund payment received.  If the income is in:

Use the link that corresponds with the type of 1099-G you received.
