I, as an independent software developer, have earned income from the Netherlands in 2016. The company who payed me does not have an EIN, since it's a foreign company. I don't know how to declare this in the turbotax "income & expenses" tab. Should I use 1099-MISC, Additional income, or uncommon income?

Please follow these steps to include the income you made while abroad:

• Open your tax return in Turbotax

• Go to Federal Taxes

• Select Wages & Income

• Click I'll choose what I work on

• Scroll down the page to the last section Less Common Income and select Show More

• Select Start to the right of Foreign Earned Income and Exclusion

• Go through this section and enter the income that you earned abroad.

Is this accurate?  I worked (from the USA) as an independent contractor for a museum in Singapore.  I tried to enter a 1099-misc but TurboTax won't let me since they don't have an EIN.  If I follow the instructions above (Less Common Income, etc), it doesn't seem to charge my any tax at all on the income, which doesn't seem correct.  Other answers say it needs to be entered twice, once under Less Common Income, and once as a 1099-misc, but that doesn't work due to the lack on an EIN.  What is the correct approach?

1) Treat as cash income.

2) It's 'foreign' income only if You were overseas, or paid foreign taxes on it.
