Question

1099-NEC for teen employee

Hi, My 17 yr old is filing for the first time.  She worked 2 summer jobs last year that ended up sending her 1099-NEC forms (I was not paying attention to how she was getting paid, lesson learned). She was a camp counselor at a church and she painted wood signs for a shop in town.

When she enters the 1099-NEC into Turbo Tax she is then prompted to fill out the info for Schedule C which asked for business names, addresses, accounting methods, business codes and whether it is a qualified business expense.  She was not really self-employed - I get she needs to pay tax, but I am perplexed by all the business owner questions and not sure how to tell her to proceed with those questions.

Thank you!

Since the 1099-NEC is not due to self-employment, you can still enter 1099-NEC via an alternative method. Please follow the steps below:

    1. Click on Tax Home from Left side Menu.
    2. Click on Wages & Income from the main screen.
    3. Then scroll down till you see the section titled " Other Common Income" . Within this section, you will see an option for Form 1099-NEC. Click on Start next to it and enter the information.

When you enter it through this method, it will not be considered self-employment income.

that is how I did it and when I get to the end of the section after entering the 1099-NEC info it asks if "I owned a farm, it should have been reported on a W-2, it was from a law suit, it is from a hobby or none of these?" If I click none of these, it says I need to do schedule C and need to enter the info in business section.  Should I be saying  it was a hobby or should have been on a w-2?

    1. Wages & Income
    2. Other Common Income
    3. Select Income from a 1099-NEC
    4. Enter the payer's name
    5. EIN Number
    6. Amount you received
    7. Describe the reason for this 1099-NEC = State what it was for
    8. Does one of these uncommon situations apply?
    9. Click This is not money earned as an employee or self-employed individual,
