1099-R State Distribution is Incorrect

Hello,

I lived in Rhode Island for 2023, am in my 90s, and have little income. I am blind so my mail address was  changed to California in February 2023 so my financial preparer could receive my mail. Unfortunately, the company issuing my 1099-R does not distinguish between a mailing address and a permanent address, so when I received my 1099-R, most of my income was distributed to California and only a small portion to RI. The company says they will not make a correction because they followed the address that I set up on their web site.

How should I file my taxes? Should I file them correctly and attribute all income to RI? Or should I file in both California and Rhode Island and split the income as stated on the 1099-R?

File them correctly and file only a Rhode Island return.

The only reason you might need to file a California return is to get a refund of any state taxes that were withheld from your income.  If taxes were withheld, then file a non-resident California return.
