Question

19 year old child with income, but not in college and lives at home

I am uncertain if child should file taxes or not and whether I have to claim the child’s income on my taxes. Had earnings of shy of $10K for the year. Child turned 19 in June 2024 and is not in college and does not pay rent to me but is on my health insurance.

Does the child need to file taxes? Do I add child's income to my taxes?

Thanks!

You do NOT claim the child's income on your tax return.  As for whether or not the child needs to file a tax return, were any income taxes withheld?  If so, a tax return needs to be filed to receive a refund.  If the child's income is all earned income and there was no tax withheld they do not need to file a tax return.

Thanks.

Is there any scenario in which a parent

would have to report a child’s income with their income?

Minor children with investment income.

Depends. If W-2 income no return is needed unless he has to get tax withheld back. If self employment income he must file a return. Under no circumstances do you report his income on your return. You cannot claim him as a dependent.
