If you are reporting estimated taxes you paid in 2016 (and possibly early 2017) toward 2016 taxes, here's how to navigate to the estimated taxes section in the Online product:

  • Log in and go to your 2016 Tax Timeline.
  • Choose "Take me to my return".
  • When the return is open, click at the top right corner on the Search tab.
  • Enter quarterly without quotes.
  • Choose Jump to quarterly.
  • You will come to a screen "Estimates and Other Income Taxes Paid".
  • The first topic is "Estimated Tax Payments."
  • Choose the category(s) for the type of tax payments.
When you later review your return, the Federal estimated tax payments should show up on your Form 1040, Line 65 or Form 1040A, Line 41.

NOTE:  If you entered state estimated tax payments, then step through the State interview to be sure they transfer over to the state side.  Before filing, review your Federal and State return.

Please clarify.   You said "2015."  Did you mean you paid the $8,000 during 2016 for 2016 estimated taxes?
Or did you have a $8,000 Federal refund from your 2015 return that you applied toward 2016 taxes?

OK.  I'll provide an answer below that will tell you how to enter it and verify that it shows up.

Here's an alternate way to get there, but it's clumsier:

Federal Taxes tab
Deductions & Credits
If a page says "Your Tax Breaks", keep scrolling further down the page to a list of "All Tax Breaks" (you may have to click a tiny blue link that says "Show all tax breaks")
Then keep scrolling down to "Estimates and Other Taxes Paid"
Expand that category ("Show more") and the first topic is "Estimates."
