Solved

2017 is the first year I'm using TT so prior years carryover losses from a rental property won't automatically populate. Can anyone tell me how to enter them manually?

I've seen an older (2015) reply to this question but the reply references screens that don't match the 2017 program.  I'm assuming the prior year accumulated losses have to entered on form 8582, but when I get to that form it can't be edited.

To enter your passive loss carryover:
  • In TurboTax, open your return
  • In the Search box on the top right of your screen, enter passive loss carryover, schedule e and click on Find at the right
  • In the search result box, click on Jump to passive loss carryover, schedule e
  • The program will take you to the Income from Rentals section. Answer Yes
  • Follow the interview until to get to the screen Do any of these situations apply to this property? (see attached screenshot)
  • Put a check mark next to I have passive real estate loss carried over from a prior year and click Continue

In TT Home and Business 2021, when I come back to enter passive loss carryover, I don't see the screen "Do any of these situations apply to this property?". How to show the wizard again?

Use the following steps:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “rental income and expenses” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to rental income and expenses
  • Click on the blue “Jump to rental income and expenses” link
  • Answer Yes, you wish to review your rental information
  • Click Continue
  • From your Rental and Royalty Summary, click Edit beside the property with the loss carryover
  • Click Update beside the Property Profile section
  • Proceed past a couple of screens until you get to one titled, 'Do Any of These Situations Apply to This Property?'
  • Check the box at the bottom of the screen under Carryovers for passive activity losses

The next screen will ask you to enter your information.
