2018 form 1095a and did not live in US for 5 month

Hello,

I did not live in the US for Jan-May. I signed up through Healthcare.gov in June. I did receive a 1095a. Any way I enter information in the Desktop version of Turbotax for my 2018 tax return I get errors.

If I indicate that I had coverage for part of the year and state that I was a foreign resident, it does not offer me to enter the 1095a and complains about it missing later.

If I state that I was insured all year and enter the 1095a I am told that I owe a penalty despite me not being a resident for the months I wasn't insured.

Is this a bug?

best regards

Holger

In the Health Insurance section of the program select I'll pick which months I had it.  Then select the months that you were covered by health insurance.  Then select the option Resident of a foreign country or U.S. territory.  Then select the months you lived in another country.  Then answer YES to having one of the less common plans.  Then select Form 1095-A.  Then enter the information from the Form 1095-A.  Continue with this section until it completes.

If you are a US citizen or resident alien abroad and you meet the bona fide resident test or the physical presence test, you are considered to have essential minimum coverage under the Act and will not be required get affordable health care insurance or pay the penalty under the PPACA for the month or months that you qualify for either of these tests

assuming you meet either test then on the personal worksheet at the bottom of part VI , this is a place to enter you were exempt.  enter code C and check off the months Jan thru May.  then at the very bottom check the box that healthcare cover is completed

on the 1095A input leave blank those months that are 0 - do not enter 0

in part II of 1095A make sure you have the right starting date which based on yor info should be 6/1/2018.  but if the 1095A is different use that because that what the IRS compares
