Additional Income and Adjustments to Income

Hi,

I don't have any addition income other than reported on W-2 forms, but turbotax asked me about this, and as a result, the pdf file generated for electronic tax filing includes forms titled "Additional Income and Adjustments to Income". Moreover, under its Part1 8z "Other income. List type and amount", turbotax wrote "Income reported on Form 1042-S: 0". Based on other answers on the forum, I suspect that what prompted turbotax to do this is because I received an income reported on 1042-S last year. But, I don't have any such income this year.  So I entered 0 for Additional Income and Adjustments to Income. Can I submit the tax filing as is, or should I edit it so that turbotax wouldn't include "Additional Income and Adjustments to Income" forms?

As long as it is not rejecting I would e-file it as is.  This Schedule 1 probably did generate because you had one last year. Since it is reporting it as zero it will not affect your taxable income.

Click here for additional information on Schedule 1.

Thank you for your answer! I just have one clarification question. What do you refer to as "it"?  Do you mean IRS rejecting it after I e-file or TurboTax rejecting it during review?

@LindaS5247  is referring to the IRS not rejecting your tax return after you efile.

I am NOT a tax expert ... but over the years of using turbo tax with a variety of varied income types over the years... I have found that once I use a form that becomes "irrelevant" the next year... because I no longer have that income... it remains in my "step to step" journey year after year after year until I delete it.  I finally just "deleted the form" because I found it to be ... annoying.  It is easy to delete the form.  If you switch your method on the top right from "step by step" to "forms" and look at the list of "forms" present in your return.... You can then open the form you want to "delete".  Turbotax allows you to "delete form" and then it magically goes away.  If you leave your entry of 0 and send it off to IRS... you will be fine...because you entered 0 you won't owe more taxes... but next year... you will once again have the form presented to you in the step by step.  I don't know how many years it remains but in my experience... it is easier to just delete it (with a couple of clicks) and say goodbye to it forever.  If you ever need to add the form to use that isn't provided to you in you current "step by step" interview... you can easily re-add it in the same "forms" platform.   Good luck

Thank you for tip! Yes, I also would like to delete the form, but I couldn't find where I can switch my method from "step by step" to "forms". Maybe it's because I am already at the very last stage right before I e-file? Could you or someone else elaborate on where I can switch to "forms" method?

you can open your return up and on the blue bar... at least my deluxe version is blue... on the top left it says turbotax deluxe and in the top center of your screen you see the green lit up federal refund amount and then right next to that on the right it says ... "step by step"  - that is the button you click one time and then it takes you directly to forms... you look through the list of forms currently present in your return... and ... click once on the line (on left of your screen) on the form "additional Income and Adjustments to income.  That form then appears on you screen - and you can then "delete the form".  Right under the form it gives you options to "print" "delete" or "close".  Click on delete - verify you want to delete it- and bye bye form!!!
