After completing my fed & state tax returns using the turbo tax free edition, I’m now being required to purchase the deluxe version to file. Reason given is I received a state income tax refund l

If I was able to complete my tax returns (which included my 1099-G form) using the free version then why do I need to purchase the deluxe version just to file?

Did you use the Itemized Deduction or Standard Deduction last year? If you used the Standard Deduction last year then you are not required to report the State income tax refund from Form 1099-G and you could delete the 1099-G by following the instructions below:

I used the itemized deduction last year. But even so, I was still able to answer questions about my 2017 deductions using the turbo tax free edition & completed my return. This being the case, can I file still using the free version? If not, why not?
