If social security is your only income you don’t have to file a tax return.

As Bsch4477 states "If social security is your only income you don't have to file a tax return."   The reference is IRS Publication 501, Table 1.  

 

However, check your form 1099-SSA box  6 for any taxes that may have been withheld.  If there were taxes withheld, you should file a return to get those refunded.

 

If you want to file a return for a tax refund, in TurboTax select the "Wages and Income" section and scroll to "Retirement Plans and Social Security."  Next "Start" the "Social Security" topic and enter your 1099-SSA information specifically boxes 5 and 6.
