Am I a "Qualifying surviving spouse"? I am 78 and widowed after filing jointly for 53 years.

In the year of death you can file a final joint return with the decedent. Then for the following 2 tax years you can be a qualifying widow IF you have a Qualifying dependent.

In the program it will ask for your current MARITAL status which would be widow/er if you had not remarried and the year of the spouse's death. Then if you enter a qualifying dependent the option to file as Qualifying Widow will be an option. Just follow the interview screens one by one and answer the question being presented ... don't jump ahead or presume.
