Amending a 2021 from Married Filing Separately to Married Filing Joint

The answer is hopefully as simple as it may seem or I'm missing a step.

In 2021 TT filed our returns as Married Filing Separately. I had started those 2 to see if we were better off filing separately rather than jointly. We weren't so I filled out a "joint" return that apparently was never filed. How do I make the change? Is it as simple as correcting one of the "separately" forms to "jointly"? And if so how do I file it as an amended return? Also does that mean 2022 will require an extension until 2021 is accepted?

Thanks in advance.

Yes. It is possible to amend from Married filing Separately (MFS) to Married filing Jointly (MFJ).

The good news is that you only need to amend one of the returns; the IRS will disregard the other separately-filed return when they receive your amendment.

Please follow the instructions in this TurboTax Help article to amend your return.

You do not need to file an extension and can file your 2022 tax return normally without waiting for your 2021 amended return to be processed.

Great answer and thanks BUT I do have another question.  If my 2022 return was rejected because of  "IND-031-04 The primary taxpayer's AGI of Self-select PIN from last year does not match IRS records."  and amended returns are not looked at for weeks won't I get another rejection from the IRS?

Your amended 2021 tax return would not affect the acceptance of your 2022 return, as you would need to use the AGI on your ORIGINAL return, not the amended return.
