My boyfriend lives in Washingtin but works in Oregon as a semi driver. He regularly makes deliveries in both states daily.

My question is, does he need to file in both states or just his home state of Washington? How does he file with the IRS?

This is all completely new to us.

He will file his federal taxes just as he always has.  All of his income goes on there.

Whether or not he has to file an Oregon return depends on where the money comes from.  Just because he drives into Oregon every day and drops stuff off doesn't mean that any of his money comes from Oregon sources.  If he is paid solely by employers located in Washington and he lives in Washington then he doesn't need to file an Oregon return.

If some of the money that he earns comes from sources in Oregon - truck drivers often get paid by lots of companies - then he will have to file an Oregon non-resident return.  He will have to separate out what income he received from sources in Oregon and what he received from back home in Washington.  Then, he'll owe some taxes to Oregon for the money that he earned that came from Oregon.

WA has no state income tax.  He files a federal return and an OR return since he is working in OR.

I understand Washinton doesn't have state tax. Does he need to file in Oregon? How does this work with filing federal taxes?

He will use his WA mailing address on his federal return.  In MY INFO he will be asked if he made money in any other state, and he will say yes, and click that he made money in OR.   When he enters his W-2 into the federal return, it will flow to an OR non-resident state tax return form.   He will file a federal return and an OR return.
