I'm currently in residency (Internal Medicine) and this year I interviewed at various places for another residency (Radiation Oncology). How strict is the deffinition of different occupation for this deduction? I will still be a physician, does my field of expertise matter that much? I know that some fellowship training interviews can be deducted but they would also be categorized as different fields as far as the medical profession is concerned.

These expenses are job search expenses.

Up to tax year 2017, job-search expenses were deductible as an itemized deduction subject to the 2% of AGI floor.

Under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, the itemized deductions for job search expenses subject to the 2% of AGI floor are suspended for expenses incurred after December 31, 2017 through 2025.
