Question

As a personal assistant my client reuqests stuff from the grocery store, can I write that off because he pays me back on my checks?

Possibly. I'm assuming you are self-employed because you refer to a client. You can write off the amounts you spend on your client, but you'll also have to report the amount received on checks as income so the end result will be $0.

You won't really have a net deduction. You'll just be adding the same amounts to income and expenses and they'll cancel each other out.
