Asking for a friend: Filing tax return after rejected but kid has sent in 1040x
Hi,
So my friend's kid e-filed a tax return, claiming himself for the first time, parents were fine with that then everyone remembered a big medical bill mid-year - so he didn't pay half for himself. Kid filed a 1040-x, by paper, saying he'd be claimed by someone else. Parents waited to e-file until that was *in the mail*, but IRS immediately rejected it, noting he couldn't be claimed as a dependent as they already had his 1040, but of course, not yet his 1040-x. TurboTax suggests removing him as a dependent - but that's not the plan. Is it possible to wait long enough until the 1040-x gets processed and then e-file again via TurboTax without removing him as a dependent? Or at this point does the parents' return need to be sent in by mail? Anyone know? And if so, how long to wait before filing it since the IRS has noted these returns are connected?
