If you received an email claiming to be from the IRS, then it is likely a scam.  The IRS does not contact you initially by any method except for through a letter in the mail sent to the address shown on your tax return.

You may receive contact from them using other methods after you are already working with them on an issue, but not initially.

If you are being audited, the IRS would contact you by mail to let you know.  We would not be made aware of the audit, only you would be.
