Before I start I need to ask: My wife passed away in March 2016, therefore, do I file a joint return or as a widower? In checking with the IRS web site I'm a bit confused

I am sorry for your loss. You are able to file a joint return for the year that your spouse passes. In the personal Info section you can select that the person passed away during the year.
