Box 14 on my w2 paper is typed amount 284.71. my total wages is 28,471. why are they the same except where the comma and period is? wich one do i use?

You should enter the 284.71 if that is what's in box 14.

 

Box 14 on your W-2 is used to report things like insurance premiums or taxes that the employer pays on behalf of the employee.

 

It is likely that there is some tax or premium that is set at 1% of your total wages (that's what 284.17 is).
