Question

Box 15 says FL but the Emplyer's state ID number is blank. Turbotax keeps saying my w2 nedds review. Can I leave it blank?

Several  states do not have a state income tax.  So these states will not show up in certain drop down lists.   Leave boxes 15, 16, and 17 blank when you enter a W-2 for these states.

Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming

Leave it blank - if you continue to encounter review issues that keep you from proceeding and e-filing, leave out the "FL" entry of Box 15 as well.

Since FL does not have an income tax, you should not have any information in Boxes 16 and 17 (State wages and State Income Tax). Any entries in Box 15 (State Abbreviation and State Employer ID) are unnecessary.

The state employer ID number is really only a bureaucratic convenience for your state's department of revenue; it's simply not an essential element to the correct filing and processing of a valid personal income tax return (either state or federal).
