Question

Box 16-1 is empty on my W-2 but TurboTax won't let me file with it empty.

I received two W-2's from the same employer, one for KS my resident state and one for MO my non-resident state. The MO one only has box 15-17 filled out. The KS one is completely filled out expect for box 16. I filed 1 return since both W-2's are from the same employer but TurboTax won't let me file without box 16 filled out for KS but it is blank on my W-2. What do I do?

Call your employer and ask them what the Kansas state wages were. They must know, since they withheld taxes on that income (box 17 on the same line has an amount for state income tax withheld, right?). You may need a corrected W-2.

Are boxes 1 through 14 the same on both W-2s (or completely blank on one)? If so, it is likely that you can combine the two W-2s into one W-2. Employers withholding in two states often put the states on two separate but otherwise identical (or one blank) W-2s.

Note that you can always file (by mail) - what you can't do is "e-file" because of the screening filters on the e-file process.
