My daughter turned 19 in September 2018, she graduated from high school June 2018 but currently not in school, she lives with me and does not provide more than half her own expenses, and she earned $4,700 in 2018.  Can I claim her as a dependent on my 2018 tax return?

Yes, since she was a full-time student in 2018 and meets the requirements below. Enter yes, on the Was XXX a full-time student in 2018? screen.

    • You must be full-time for some part of each of 5 calendar months during the 2018 year. (The months need not be consecutive).

Make sure when she files her income tax return that she states she is being claimed as a dependent on someone else's tax return.

You can claim a child, relative, friend, or fiance (etc.) as a dependent on your 2018 taxes as long as they meet the following requirements:

    Qualifying child

    • They are related to you.
    • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
    • They are a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
    • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
    • They are under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).
      • No age limit for permanently and totally disabled children.
    • They live with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).
    • They didn't provide more than half of their own support for the year.
