when I was working on my 2021 tax return. a question asks if my daughter is a US citizen/resident. she got her green card and came to america for the first time in January 2022. she was living in foreign country and didn't have green card in 2021. I didn't live her at all in 2021 but support her more than half financially.

I googled and saw I can claim my daughter as dependent even if I didn't live with her in the tax year but provide more than half financially. but can I still claim her as my dependent if she is a resident only starting in 2022 but not in 2021?

Thank you

It depends on what country your daughter lived in. If she lived in Mexico or Canada you can claim her as a dependent even though she was not a U.S. citizen or resident alien, provided the other requirements are met. If she lived in any other country you cannot claim her.

You can use the tool at the following link on the IRS web site to determine whether you can claim your daughter as a dependent.

You cannot claim your daughter on your 2021 tax return unless she lived in Canada or Mexico in 2021.
