If she stayed with you for more days than she stayed with your mother, you may be able to claim her as a dependent if your mother doesn't claim her and your sister meets additional requirements.

  • When you add your sister as a dependent on your income tax return, TurboTax will ask you a series of questions to make sure you can claim her a dependent.

Here are the requirements to claim your sister as a dependent:

  • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • They're a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
  • They lived with you the entire year.
  • They made less than $4,300 in 2020.
  • You provided more than half of their financial support.
