I am a live in caregiver for my mother. She receives SSDI ($8,772/yr), Housing assistance, Medicaid, and SNAP benefits. However I pay for all the house necessities, buy over 1/2 her groceries (because her SNAP benefits are not enough to support her diabetic and renial diet for the month), buy all medical supplies needed that are not paid for by Medicaid ( bandages, creams, etc), provided all transportation for her, and pay for some of her bills. Can I claim her on my taxes?

You can claim her if, in addition to being a citizen of the US or a resident of the US, Canada or Mexico:

    • you must provide more than 1/2 of  their support,
    • they must not earn more than $4,000 in 2015 in gross income subject to tax (social security doesn't count).
    • they must not file a joint return with another
    • If not an actual relative, they must live with you all 365 days of the year, and
    • they must not be a qualifying child of another taxpayer
