Can I claim my wife as a dependent if she was in school for 5 months and did not start to work until August only working for 5 months total for the year.

The better way to file would be Married Filing Jointly.

That way, not only does your wife get to claim her dependency exemption, you get a higher standard deduction than filing Head of Household or Separately.
