Question

Can I e-file after mailing in my tax return since the IRS is not processing paper returns due to COVID-19?

You can only e-file the original return.

The IRS will not accept an e-filed return after another return has been processed.

If your paper return has not been processed, the IRS might accept an e-filed return.

When the paper filed return is processed, you can expect some correspondence from the IRS regarding the two returns.

I have called several times and provided the required information to see if the IRS received my tax return and it is in process - they cannot provide this information.   I take that to mean they have not received my tax return mailed February 2, 2022.

@ Dianne Fisher - the IRS is woefully behind on processing paper returns.  I'd give it a good 6-9 months (so Aug - Nov) before even being concerned,...... from the IRS website, 80% of the backlog are the paper returns!

"As of May 20, 2022, we had 9.8 million unprocessed individual returns which include returns received before 2022, and new tax year 2021 returns. Of these, 2 million returns require error correction or other special handling, and 7.8 million are paper returns waiting to be reviewed and processed."
