Question

Can I file a separate state return only (MA) if I have already filed my federal return jointly with my spouse?

My husband's residence and work are in VT and mine are in MA.  We have already filed our federal joint return and were instructed to file our state returns separately.  I need to print and mail a state return for MA but TurboTax is not giving me an option to only print/file state without filing federal and paying to file the federal.

TurboTax will not let you prepare a state only return because the state return is tied to the federal return.

If you created a separate online account to prepare a married filing separate state tax return then your will have to pay for both federal and state.

We recommend doing these with the CD\Download program.

How do I prepare a joint federal return and separate state returns?

Alternatively, you may be able to file online for free with Massachusetts using the free fillable forms electronic program for full-year residents.
